ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 presents the dimension of time and its relevance to urban regeneration and tourism. It first frames urban tourism and urban change within the three waves of neoliberalism, with evidence from urban regeneration projects relevant to tourism across the globe over the last 40 years. The chapter then introduces the notions of crisis-driven and event-led regeneration within the discourse of tourism-oriented urban development. The chapter then focuses on urban regeneration and tourism in post-disaster contexts, with evidence from the United States, New Zealand and Japan. Finally, the chapter illustrates the dimension of time and ties it to the global circulation of capital with evidence from mainstream urban research and case studies relevant to urban tourism.
