ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores how streams of organic waste and residues can be transformed into valuable products and thus foster a transition towards a sustainable and circular bioeconomy. It improves the understanding of the bioeconomy by exploring the origins, uptake and use of the term “bioeconomy” in academic literature. The book develops a theoretical framework for understanding the patterns, drivers and contexts of organic waste valorisation within and across bio-based sectors. It investigates activity in the Norwegian bioeconomy by combining and analysing a range of data sources, including patent data and project data, as well as the results from two recent surveys. The book aims to provide an overview of the population and actions of actors in the Norwegian bioeconomy.
