Library Coverage

The main collection of town directories is housed in the Helsinki University Library, which is also the National Library. This was the starting point of the survey and contains a large percentage of the directories listed in the bibliography. This coverage is much more restricted than that undertaken by Strang for his bibliography, in which some 170 different directory collections are covered. Many of these collections are housed in small libraries and archives and, whilst they contain rare directories not found elsewhere, the largest collection available is in the Helsinki University Library. In this survey three major library collections were investigated:
