ABSTRACT

Unlike Germany, little attention has been paid to the evolution of Austrian directories, and as a consequence much of the available evidence is rather fragmented. During the eighteenth century three different types of publications can be recognized in Vienna, each of which were early forerunners of the directory. Given the early development of Adreßkalender and more especially professional directories it seems surprising that the first comprehensive town directories appeared relatively late in Austria. Despite their neglect by researchers, Austrian directories, especially those available for Vienna, contain a good range of information, including some items not always found in similar publications from other countries. In terms of compiling the 1859 directory the initial task was to transcribe all the entries from the census. The compilation of the Vienna Directory was maintained throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century by Lehmann until his death in 1904.
