ABSTRACT

Elderly people tend to tire easily, have a limited concentration period, and, in varying degrees, impaired memory, those with dementia being the worst in all respects. Communication is a most important factor in work with the elderly. There is a wide range of both physical and mental abilities in any group of elderly people. There are occasionally younger people who fit into groups for the elderly. Most elderly folk love a sing-song and a few bars of a familiar tune, played or sung, will soon arouse interest and participation. Drama is based on play and the non-competitive games which form basic drama are ideal for use with the elderly. Critics who feel that we are treating the elderly as children should be reminded that retirement is frequently a time for involvement in games. Games which involve sensory perception are particularly valuable to the elderly, but must be played with regard to visual and auditory disabilities.
