ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the atemporal world that J.McT.E. McTaggart calls the C series. It provides McTaggart’s replacement for time, the atemporal C series. Although time is unreal the A and B series still exist as misperceptions. Time is therefore described by the system of fragmentary parts. The chapter looks at how the C series resembles the B series. The time system has corresponding dimensions, the transitive and asymmetrical relations of the B series and the transitive and symmetrical relation of simultaneity. McTaggart says it is possible that a self should perceive either its own inclusion series or the inclusion series of another self as not in time. The C series is coherent with the relevant elements of McTaggart’s fuller philosophy. The chapter describes how the atemporal C series is a serious attempt to replace the B series and does not form part of the argument for the denial of time.
