ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the reasons for the growth of interest in participatory needs assessment, and explores the different ways that communities can be involved in identifying needs and in working in partnership with key local agencies to find ways of meeting those needs. Ways of determining which areas to focus on for a needs assessment exercise are discussed, and case studies of both the process of undertaking a participatory needs assess ment, and in selecting a geographical area are included.
