ABSTRACT

The potential of optical interconnects to form large bandwidth highways for data processing was one of the motivations for the large effort on Optical Computing in the 1980s. The advantages are 2D high density wiring which has zero crosstalk even for interpenetrating beams [49]. This potential has still to be fully realised. The following attempts will be described in this section: solid optics, planar (or flat) optics, LEGO®® optics, modular approach, and waferscale assembly.
