ABSTRACT

The Future of Life Institute organized a three-day conference in January 2017 at Asilomar, the same location where the Asilomar Conference on Recombinant DNA had taken place in 1975, to discuss ways to help guide future AI development efforts in a direction that is beneficial to mankind. The conference was called Beneficial AI. The conference concluded with the formation of a number of defining principles aimed at helping AI develop along positive lines, and to help research progress and unfold in a way that keeps humans in control. The conference participants came from an extremely wide spectrum of professions and had different and varied backgrounds. A list of 23 principles was then put forth as the AI Asilomar Principles. The principles are organized under three categories: (i) research related, (ii) related to ethics and values, and (iii) principles concerned with futuristic/long-term issues.
