ABSTRACT
This paper provides a basic introduction into the earlier phases of the economic reconstruction programme that was introduced in Poland following the economic, political and social changes that took place through the 1980s and culminated in the dramatic events of 1989 and 1990. It acts as a forerunner to the discussion in subsequent papers which examines the implications for the maritime sector, of the transformation in the economy that has occurred so far.
