ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some strategies for the selection of Language Teacher Education (LTE)-related research topics. It addresses germane areas of interest within LTE that relate to primary and secondary school English education in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context. Team teaching partnerships between native English speaking teachers and non-native English speaking teachers in EFL classrooms have been widely adopted in Japan. Local Japanese teachers of English and foreign assistant language teachers (ALT), hired through the government-sponsored Japan Exchange and Teaching program, have been collaboratively teaching to enhance foreign language education for many years. The government aims to accelerate the trend with plans to hire 50,000 ALTs by 2023 so that there is at least one ALT for every primary and secondary school in the country. One possible research topic is how participation in teacher research affects the professional experiences of language teachers in primary and secondary schools.
