ABSTRACT

A number of strategy instruction programs have been promoted, one of the most recent being the Keys to Effective Learning by Tang and Griffiths, which suggests a five-step procedure, but this procedure is waiting further research to determine its effectiveness or to suggest modifications. Individual differences are another area that has attracted a great deal of research interest. Strategy development inter-relates with all other individual variables, and to the learning target, and all of these need to be considered when attempting to research the strategy phenomenon and to come to meaningful conclusions regarding how they are best instructed. Contextual issue that is beginning to be more and more popular is that of the use of English as a medium of instruction, content and language integrated learning, and content-based learning. Contemporary theory recognizes that learning is not a simple or a linear process; it is, highly complex, and this relates no less to strategy development than to any other factors.
