ABSTRACT

More and more PSE programs are offering inclusive, on-campus residential living for students with ID. There are many benefits to living away from home and having the opportunity for self-discovery. Living away from home provides more opportunities for situational learning, self-determination, engaging in campus life, developing meaningful relationships, and increased maturity. Risks associated could involve more emotional reactions and management of challenging behaviors, illegal substance exposure and curiosity, and balancing parental concerns and demands. This chapter discusses the risks and benefits of residential living as well as specific strategies in preparing for on-campus living and negotiating fully inclusive on-campus housing options.
