ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the locations department of a film crew, examines the positions within this department, and the chief responsibilities of the department head. Films such as Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Psycho, and The Tree of Life are referenced in the discussions. There is also a case study of Orson Welles’ use of locations in his film Touch of Evil, and some remarks about the film Brick, directed by Rian Johnson. An interview is included with location manager Samson Jacobson, who has worked in the locations department for such films as Good Time, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Noah, Inside Llewyn Davis, and If Beale Street Could Talk. The chapter concludes with a list of tasks meant to help a director collaborate and work with the location manager.
