ABSTRACT

The way the camera and lighting team work together is fairly standardized. The commonalties of technique and tools make it possible for a crew that has never worked together before to get the job done with a fair amount of efficiency, even when it includes members from other countries. This chapter examines the duties of each member of the team and how they work together on and off the set. The cinematographer’s vision of the lighting is implemented by the gaffer and the key grip. The gaffer is the director of photography's (DP) chief lieutenant for lighting. The DP is in charge creatively, but it usually falls to the gaffer and second to run the lighting operation efficiently. As the gaffer calls for a light the procedure is generally this: an electrician goes to get the light and another lighting technician brings power to it with the appropriate cable.
