ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests an overall approach to social studies curriculum and the teaching of the curriculum. It presents the goals of social studies as perceived by different groups. One of the primary purposes behind the Common Core Standards is to help provide a more clear and consistent set of expectations for student learning at each grade level across the United States. In 2013, the National Council for the Social Studies developed the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies Standards. Building on the C3 Framework, in the spring of 2018 a National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) task force published a set of standards for the preparation of social studies teachers. A teacher who uses the problems approach is going to be constantly asking questions, trying to arouse curiosity, and having the students make decisions.
