ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) social studies and various teaching techniques that can be utilized to accommodate the needs of English learners. When communicating with ELLs in a social studies classroom, teachers should speak clearly. Teachers should utilize various visual aids to accommodate instruction. The utilization of visual aids is an essential feature of effective instruction because it provides the support needed to contextualize learning. Multicultural education has been a transforming force in social studies since the 1960s, yet even its strongest advocates differ widely about what exactly multicultural education should be. Classroom structure will help ELLs to function in the classroom environment. One of the core components of social studies is social interaction. Another core component of social studies is culture. The chapter concludes with a discussion of teaching exceptional education students and details various strategies social studies teachers can utilize to accommodate social studies instruction.
