ABSTRACT

Previous research on visualisation has found that it can be particularly helpful in enhancing emotions, which in turn are linked to academic success (#58). However, and in support of this study, other research has found a darker side to visualisation. A rather fascinating and quirky study found that for participants who were trying to lose weight, visualising the outcome, such as the amount of weight they wanted to lose, were more likely to be tempted by the offer of free doughnuts. It would appear that focusing too much on the outcome can have a detrimental effect.
