ABSTRACT

A whole host of research has found a link between how parents and teachers talk to students and how the students talk to themselves. Generally speaking, these studies have found that positive interactions result in students viewing themselves in a better light (#9). Likewise, negative interactions often lead to a negative self-perception (#7). Furthermore, these effects appear to be long lasting, with these consequences and beliefs being held firmly for many years after the initial comments have been made.
