ABSTRACT

The growth of the population has increased the anthropization and the need of new settlements and infrastructures in new areas. In some cases these areas have been left uninhabitated because of geographical difficulties like: previous flooding, heavy rain or high slope.

A not conscious way of design, especially in mountain areas, caused several disastrous events due to a not proper knowledge of the relation between amount of rain, soil type of rock, flow rate and their consequences to the environment and settlements.

This focus has highlighted the need of more precise design criteria, hydraulically based, especially for debris flow events.

The aim of Maccaferri Innovation Center research was to find new and more performant products against this impulsive and destructive phenomenon. Moreover, the purpose was to test the hydraulic performance of several apparatus, from weirs to metal nets, and to find the one that requires the less effort in maintenance and less risk, aspiring to a more sustainable way of design.
