ABSTRACT

Asphalt is a pavement material that can provide multiple properties to a greater or lesser extent. Oscar Wilde described the UK and USA as ‘two nations divided by a common language’ and nowhere is this statement more relevant than for asphalt technology. In Europe, ‘asphalt concrete’ is a specific mixture type which can cause confusion when it is uncertain whether the term relates to the mixture type or to all/any of them, while the binder is known as ‘bitumen’. The term ‘hot mix asphalt’ has been widely used for referring to asphalt world-wide. However, the term has become more specific with the recent increasing use of asphalt mixtures that are mixed and laid at temperatures lower than those that were previously standard. The inclusion of reclaimed asphalt will not be explicitly covered because this component material should not affect the properties of an asphalt mixture or the situations in which it can be used.
