ABSTRACT

Technology impacts virtually every aspect of life, including politics. Its scope and power are ever expanding. This chapter explores the meaning of technology and investigates the opportunities and dangers it presents to political life in the twenty-first century. It addresses the machinery of government, information technology, automation, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. An expansive understanding of technology is proposed that accounts for its impact on human development. The art and craft of political theory is reframed in the light of this inquiry, highlighting the crucial mission for theorists in a technological age.
