ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises some of the most important systemic principles and resources which the author think are key to the idea of leadership at all levels. A systemic understanding of relationships includes perspectives of hierarchy and power, which are relevant to meetings like this, where the professionals are embedded in systems which confer authority over others. Systemic practice pays attention to the different systems that people are involved in, as well as the internal workings of each system, be it family, political or educational. Systemic questions, an important resource for consultants and leaders, can invite people to broaden the context. A challenge is how to incorporate these ideas into leadership training. In the author's experience in training in education and other organisations, many training courses are run in one, two or even three day intensive periods. The chapter presents a range of ideas which can enhance processes of leadership at all levels, underpinned by systemic practice.
