ABSTRACT

Impressions are important and leadership and success is often seen as the result of one person's actions. Returning to leadership theory, critics suggest that theories may be flawed in that they refer mainly to white, male leaders. The 2016 report suggests that family businesses still struggle, making the point that the leader of such a firm is unlikely to have gone through a competitive recruitment process and may not be of the same calibre as an externally recruited manager. The day-to-day experience of leadership and management can be isolating and leaders are sometimes seen as responsible for all negative perceptions about the workplace. Many organisations are structured around a hierarchy of leadership and while it appears to be workable, it can lead to problems if too much authority is vested in leaders. Employee engagement is defined as having influence over one's job and how one uses one's skills, as well as being motivated to make an effort.
