ABSTRACT

A systemic perspective is complementary to the behavioural one, because it extends beyond the individual to include the external environment, and recognises that for change to happen there will be change in the system which has formed around the problem. An important question to consider when embarking on consultation work is the individual's readiness for change. A systemic perspective can help to defuse such situations and promote leadership. Systemic practice promotes clear contracting when working with clients and doubts about issues like this must be clarified before proceeding. It is important to remember that the relationship with the consultant is more important than the type of consultation offered. If the client and consultant work well together, there is a higher chance of goals being achieved. Change from the organisational perspective is different to that of individual change but also needs to be addressed.
