ABSTRACT

Ultrasonography in early pregnancy confirms the widespread impression that the number of conceived multiple pregnancies exceeds the multiple birth rate. Spontaneous embryonic or fetal loss in the first trimester of multifetal gestations, also known as the ‘vanishing twin’ phenomenon, is a fairly frequent occurrence1,2. Valid and reproducible scientific studies have confirmed spontaneous pregnancy loss in multifetal gestations in animals as well as in humans, these data having been solidified by developments in both sonographic and assisted reproductive technologies1.
