ABSTRACT

Szczecin-Swinoujscie Port represents the third of the large international ports of Poland, following the sections on Gdynia and Gdansk which were included earlier. Szczecin-Swinoujscie today is a major bulk port specialising in coal, iron ore and grain but with substantial interests in a multitude of other bulk commodities, general. In total there are some 8 km of quays and over 130 cranes and the port can handle ships with a draught of up to 12.8 metres at Swinoujscie and 9.15 metres at Szczecin. The initial shipping service was one provided by the Polish Baltic Coastal Trade Company concentrating on services between Szczecin and Swinoujscie; regular sea navigation services started in 1947. As with both Gdynia and Gdansk, Szczecin-Swinoujscie Port Authority has been subject to the impact of the new Ports Act of Poland which, after a very long gestation period finally came into force in August of 1997.
