ABSTRACT

The paper presents the results on numerical modeling of stress-strain state in the rock mass adjacent to an eastern wall of the Zhelezny open pit, JSC Kovdorsky GOK. The authors estimated influence of gravitational-tectonic stress field and fault structures on wall stability. The work reveals specifics of the stress field transformation of a deepened pit wall. The authors have determined parts of the open pit wall with the compression level to be sufficient for the rockbursts (according to forecasting) and the parts with a probable germination of tensile cracks due to high tensile stresses.

Based on the numerical modeling results, the rock mass stability under the industrial facilities located near the eastern open pit wall has been estimated. The calculations were performed using Sigma GT software, developed at the Mining Institute of the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
