ABSTRACT

Nursing students only acquire confidence for the important skill of medication administration by performing it on live human beings. The medication rooms in some agencies may only be accessed with an identification badge or other security measures. Medication administration is a time-consuming task when working with student nurses and requires patience. Oversight of multiple nursing students is hard work, and medication administration is time consuming if it is to be accomplished safely. Plan on experiencing days when instructor cannot have all students administer medications. Other days it may require that instructor ask the assigned nurse to do it to avoid delays. Student preparation is the key to assure that safety is maintained, while allowing them to critically think about the task at hand. Student medication errors must be handled immediately. Patient safety is of utmost importance.
