ABSTRACT

In the Meiji era, the Japanese emphatically introduced the Western culture and institutions. Foreign culture and institutions were introduced, that is, Kanjyoed, and then combined with others to create new ones, that is, Shugoed. When people speak of the Japanese culture, there are generally several different lines of thought. Since the publication of The Chrysanthemum and the Sword by Ruth Benedict, most scholars have tried to interpret and explain Japanese culture through Confucianist mentality. The Kami Way has forged the Japanese mentality. But, we ought not to miss the fact that the Japanese mentality, in its turn, has forged the Kami Way. When people speak of the Japanese culture, there are generally three different lines of thought. The Japanese have, many times in history, formed a new combination of clothes to have a healthy and convenient life, although some intellectuals have often uttered cynical remarks about them.
