ABSTRACT

Vector files are created based on polygons and mathematical curves and lines. No matter the size, whether reduced or enlarged, they maintain the sharpest quality. By contrast, Photoshop uses pixels, meaning that once an image is small, it cannot be enlarged to high quality, because the limited pixels means the image will always have low resolution. Vectors are preferred for icons, shapes, and even typefaces that need sharpness around the outline. In Illustrator, vector files with the extensions. AI,.EPS, and.PDF can be exported as pixelated images, such as JPEG, PNG, and GIF. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a great option to keep icons at a high resolution while still maintaining a very small file size. At present, SVG files are not supported in InDesign. SVG files are already being used on many platforms, such as e-books and websites, and their use will grow further in the future because of their flexibility.
