ABSTRACT
This chapter argues that integrating green cultural heritage into a deep cities approach, which looks at the historical layers of a city, is of vital significance as green spaces have a historic, multi-layered past that needs to be integrated into a constantly evolving urban environment. Some of the most frequently used buzzwords in contemporary urban environments and planning discourses include terms such as ‘green cities’, resilience, sustainability and densification. Sustainability issues related to green urban spaces is a topic that has widely been discussed since the 1960s. Ecological balance must be maintained in rural and urban areas: the preservation of recreational areas and places of historic interest or special landscape character is one of the means to achieve this. Planning and development programmes tend to ignore or neglect the current or potential economic as well as emotional value of urban green spaces allowing the justification of dense building and construction.
