ABSTRACT
The most remarkable part of this remarkable story is the statement—Ex. 7:22—“and the magicians of Egypt did in like manner with their enchantments. ” In any event one might suppose the Egyptians had had enough frogs and blood for water without the additional supply prepared by the magicians. But the Egyptians, according to the tale, reached their limit at lice. Ex. 12:35-36, states that, when Hebrews suddenly summoned to depart, they hastened, at a moment’s notice, to ‘borrow’ in all directions from the Egyptians, and collected such a vast amount of treasure, in a very short space of time, that they ‘spoiled the Egyptians. ’ In fact, several of the miracles, especially that of the ‘thick darkness,’ imply that the abodes of the Hebrews were wholly apart from those of the Egyptians, however difficult it may be to conceive how, under such circumstances, each woman could have borrowed from her that ‘sojourned in her house.’.
