ABSTRACT

In considering the discovery of God by the Hebrew nation it is very important to bear in mind that probably no portion of the Bible was written before the time of Samuel, about 1050 B. C, and that the book of Deuteronomy was written during the reign of Josiah, about 620 B. C. It must be kept in mind that even after the Hebrews had adopted Jehovah as their special god he was no more to them than were the gods of the other nations to those nations. The origin of the name Jehovah, and the time of the adoption of Jehovah as the god of the Hebrews are somewhat uncertain. Professor Kent—History of the Hebrew people (United Kingdom), PP- 42, 43—says: “This feeling of absolute tribal unity and dependence inevitably aroused a longing for the aid of some supernatural being,—a deity who would give especial heed to the interest of the community.
