ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses China’s population, its problems, and future perspectives. In the future, China may face two kinds of population problems: one will be continuously caused by overpopulation, and the other will be problems caused by effective population control at present. While China’s labor force is increasing, the demand has decreased in the past few years and will continue to do so in the near future. Whether China’s population control policy remains successful in the future will mostly depend on the social and economic development in the rural areas. In single-child families, the child is usually the center of his or her family and receives all the attention of the family. Parents also invest a lot more money and effort in the single child’s future. Both positive and negative impacts of China’s effective population control may be felt gradually yet increasingly in the future.
