ABSTRACT

Mozambique has only few institutions of higher education, and two of these are limited in scope, providing professional training in education and international business. The remaining institution is the country’s only university, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane. The results of the admission examinations administered in February 1995 indicate the seriousness of the situation. The basic sciences are of crucial value to development, since the better natural phenomena are understood, the more they can be used in the creation of new and improved technologies that solve practical social problems. Learning about science involves empirical observation of its components and phenomena, and it is well known that science cannot be effectively taught by rote. Developing country governments as well as donors should consider that the emphasis on projects that directly influence economic development can go too far, especially in times of extreme hardship.
