ABSTRACT

The psychologist in the ab initio flight-training environment will, therefore, have multiple roles: trainer, supplier of human factors information, counsellor. The KLM Flight Academy also has a human factors and non-technical training program. In the basic training the objectives of training are: learning to control and manoeuvre the aircraft, learning the basic procedures for communication and navigation, learning the regulations and the assessment of weather conditions. In the non-technical field, the development of self-confidence and safety awareness are of highest priority during this stage. The total number of hours in which attention is given to non-technical matters and human factors amounts up to 120. A training program and its modules are not the only instruments to help in developing the technical and non-technical skills of a pilot-trainee. Human factors training and the development of non-technical skills will be standard elements of pilot training in all recognized flight academies in the near future.
