ABSTRACT

The countryside of Europe was resounding to the Teutonic and Anglo Saxon words of encouragement and shotgun assisted launches of countless numbers of subsequent flights. The airline industry is driven by the twin factors of commercial viability on the one hand and safety on the other. Traditional training methods were certainly well proven and had produced very competent, safe operations for many years. In addition to ‘managing’ energy vectors, the pilot has to navigate this collection of associated forces from one point to another, in a safe, efficient manner to achieve a viable commercial result. The development of an accurate inertial gyroscope coupled with a computer to do the calculations, rapidly led to the demise of the Navigator as a crew member. To provide both physical and ergonomic assistance in controlling the aircraft, a co-pilot or deputy Captain was carried.
