ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the rationale underlying the creation and use of a generic non-normal checklist by Aer Lingus. In preparing the overall training program, it was necessary to develop a generic checklist which captured the essentials of normal and non-normal airline checklists. A basic design objective for the full training course was to maximize training transfer to all aircraft types operated by Aer Lingus, while avoiding negative training transfer. Checklists are basically intended to support pilots in accomplishing various technical tasks. The implicit assumption underlying these training emphases is that pilots will have little problem in applying their technical training to problems in the real operational world. It is also implied that pilots will readily link, in real time, the discrete sub-tasks required to affect a successful operational outcome to any technical problem. The normal and non-normal checklists used during simulator training are of different colours. They are designed to fit back-to-back in a transparent page sized plastic cover.
