ABSTRACT

While Carte was in America, Arthur Sullivan had departed on a further holiday to Switzerland and Italy. On 26 August, in aid of the English Church at Pontresina, Sullivan himself sang the part of Cox in a performance of Cox and Box with Cecil as Box, Barnby as Bouncer, and Goldschmidt at the piano. Gilbert, in a letter to Sullivan, reported that the attack had been directly urged on by Frank Chappell of Metzler’s and his brother Cecil, a solicitor: ‘Barker resisted their approach and was knocked down and seriously hurt. As usual, Gilbert would be the stage director and Sullivan would conduct the opening performance. While in America, Sullivan was ambitious to promote his concert works too. Gilbert and Sullivan landed on 5 November and were immediately received in New York as celebrities. Sullivan had nevertheless registered for himself the telegraphic address of ‘Pinafore, New York’, corresponding to ‘Pinafore, London’ which he used at home.
