ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the membership of Area Child Protection Committees. It looks at what agencies the members represent, how regularly they attend, and how this affects the balance of the committees. The chapter explores who chairs and convenes the committees and the implications of this for the activity of the committees. It also looks at the subjects discussed in committee meetings and how this reflects the priorities of the committees. The chapter discusses how members go about representing their agencies on the committees. It explains the simple question of the size of committees. Members are typically middle managers or senior practitioners from the agencies represented on the committee. Some members are primarily practitioners although their status may still be relatively senior. The proportion of members attending meetings has a very strong negative correlation with the number of members. Some members had been informally briefed by their predecessors, and some recalled an initial discussion with the Chair of the committee.
