ABSTRACT

In an ideal world all application products and languages on PCs, minicomputers and mainframes should have the ability to store and retrieve data from databases anywhere in the enterprise with minimal programming effort, provided only that data security and authorization procedures are in place and that systems are protected from unreasonable processing demands from users. If this could be achieved in a manner transparent to the user of the application and avoid the inconsistency and redundancy inevitable with file or database downloading mechanisms, the economic advantages would be irresistable. This could only be possible if;

all computers and workstation/personal computers in the enterprise are fully networked;

the software products selected are compatible to the extent that they have database connectivity.
