ABSTRACT

Data documentation is the fundamental technique that supports data modelling in the description of data objects/entities of interest. Documentation standards can be seen to consist of two specific parts for any object defined upon the Corporate Meta Model. These are: generic documentation standards and specific documentation standards. To support data modelling properly a number of major Data Management techniques must be developed and merged together to provide complete data description. The techniques that support Data Modelling most comprehensively are: data documentation, data naming, and configuration management. In some organisations Data Management would not necessarily be responsible for the description and development of all three documentation techniques, but DM would certainly have a significant input to the Configuration Management (CM) specification. The documentation of data in a formal and rigorous manner allows the data resource of the organisation to be effectively managed and controlled.
