ABSTRACT

Engaging students has the potential to achieve multiple benefits, both for the students and their institutions, through having a positive impact on student retention, satisfaction, academic achievement and success. Opportunities to engage students as part of a learning community do need to be planned – whether that be by engineering them into curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities or by creating meaningful opportunities for students to enhance those activities. The policy starts from the position that all uses of data analytics for learning and teaching within the university should be ethical, transparent and focused on the enhancement of the student experience. Strathclyde University offers the opportunity for students at all levels to work on original research and development projects as part of multi-disciplinary teams. A key part of student engagement is engaging students in their own learning and encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning.
