ABSTRACT

The name of Yu is a very famous one in Chinese history. He was the son of Baron Kwun, who was employed by Yau for nine years in endeavouring to control the great inundation of the Yellow River. In the seventy-fifth year of that ruler he was introduced to his notice by his colleague Shun as a fit person to accomplish the task that his father had failed to accomplish. There is a legend that states that Yu got his idea of how he was to manage the flood by looking at the lines on a turtle's back. Following the inspiration that these gave him he divided the country into nine provinces and proceeded by degrees to drain off the waters from them. Having accomplished this he then more accurately defined the boundaries of his provinces, their productions and the amount of revenue they had to pay to the government.
