The vibrant mixed-use community
WithWilliam J. Weston

David Brooks describes the ideal type of the “bobo” – the bourgeois bohemian, with a bourgeois work ethic married to broad bohemian cultural tastes. What I am calling the boburb is the vibrant, mixed-use community favored by the bobos. Going beyond Brooks, we can see that the boburb is a distinctive place to raise children if you want them to have a cosmopolitan, street-smart openness to experience. Boburbia is a safer place for children than the grit of bohemia, but more interesting and engaging than the sterility of the suburbs.
