ABSTRACT

The Highlands are a unique neighborhood, while the suburbs are many. From the “sitcom” suburbs of the expansive post-World War II era to the more elaborate gated communities since the fearful 1980s, the automobile-based suburbs have become the default homes of most American families. The ranch houses of Barbourmeade and the McMansions of Lake Forest stand in for the array of subdivisions of Louisville’s east end. Many people who live in the exciting boburbs in their bar-hopping and mate-selecting years take it for granted that they should move to the suburbs when they settle down. We look at who chooses the suburbs, compared to who chooses the boburbs for their families.
