ABSTRACT

The link between sexualization and objectification, and violence on women is the consequence of precise psychological processes. Sexualization has a particular appeal to reptilian brain as it ignores the affectionate dimension and the totality of a person. Violent pornography must be considered in the most general picture of exposure to virtual violence, the noxious effects of which are incontrovertible. In terms of sexuality, exposure to violent pornography teaches models of violent behavior, reducing emotional discomfort in regards to sexual violence, favoring acceptance and banalizing it to a sadomasochistic game, preventing identification with the victim’s suffering. Specularly, women’s consumption of pornography increases the probability of their becoming victims of harassment and violence. Even general pornography has unequivocally demonstrated itself as a risk factor for male aggressive behavior against women and acceptance of violent behavior by women. If women are objects, the use of harassment and violence in order to gain possession and consumption of them are justified.
