ABSTRACT

Initial research into the coordination of cross-border collaborative teams points to an editorial role adapted to flat networking structures rather than to steep hierarchies. The list of tasks handled by the editorial coordinators is similar, whether teams are large or small, permanent or ad hoc. The initiator – the team member who brought the idea or the data – also typically keeps a special role throughout the project. Several cross-border teams have turned to project management practice adapted from software engineering, as it reflects the need for an overview of a network while constantly adapting to shifts in progress. The chapter presents two cases of coordination: in one, the Dutch online news medium De Correspondent set up an ad hoc team of more than 20 journalists for their so-called “Security For Sale” project. The second was an example from the US based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, ICIJ: their permanent structure for cross-border collaborative journalism here applied for the “LuxLeaks” investigation of tax avoidance.
