ABSTRACT

The promise of new mobility offers an opportunity to think differently about jobs and the economics of cities. In addition to increased efficiencies in driving and delivery, future transport may increase revenues and profits for corporations in ways that have impacts on jobs both inside and outside of the transportation industry. This chapter dialogues the impact on jobs and the economy in the wake of everything from delivery robots to drones to self-driving cars—all of which bring economic promise and peril. The chapter explores how cities might change in the face of new mobility, and what citizens and policymakers might do to limit the negative impacts. It concludes with the idea that even as our society becomes more technologically dependent, humans play a large role in the sustainability of our cities.
